Want to play hockey, but not sure how to start? Here's some tips!

Where Can You Learn to Play Hockey?

Surprisingly, there are plenty of opportunities to start playing hockey! The first step is deciding whether you'd like to play co-ed or women’s/men’s hockey.

If you're interested in co-ed hockey, the Chicagoland area offers two major organizations:

  • Hockey North America – Based at The Edge in Bensenville. [Learn more here.]

  • Foundry Hockey – Offers 8-week beginner classes at Center Ice of DuPage, home to the Mother Puckers.

Once you've completed beginner classes, you’ll have the opportunity to join a beginner team. If you're not quite ready to compete, you can continue taking the 8-week classes as often as needed at Center Ice or join the Novice Recreational League for a more relaxed style of gameplay.

For women seeking an all-women hockey experience, Mother Puckers offers a D6/D7 beginner exhibition team. Our coaches provide a fun, educational environment to learn the game, with practices held at Center Ice or Franklin Park Ice Arena, and games against other beginner-level teams. Simply sign up, and someone will reach out to you!

If you're an experienced player looking for a team, Mother Puckers’ D1 and D2 teams are always on the lookout for new players. Just fill out the inquiry form, and we’ll get you connected!

What Equipment Do You Need to Get Started?

Most Play It Again Sports stores carry used hockey equipment, with the Northbrook and Naperville locations offering the best selection. The Northbrook manager is a hockey player, so they can help guide you!

To get started, you'll need: ✅ Gloves ✅ Elbow guards ✅ Chest protector ✅ Hockey pants ✅ Knee guards ✅ Stick ✅ Helmet ✅ Skates

It’s highly recommended to buy new skates and helmets, as comfort and protection are crucial in a sport where falls happen. For new gear, check out Pure Hockey (multiple locations) or Jerry’s in Schaumburg. Have your feet accurately measured and test the skates thoroughly, as poor-fitting skates can be a costly mistake. Most stores offer a 30-day return policy.
